I've have now gotten two email asking me how I put something together. Where I have boughten my supplies plus will I sell the supplies to recreate the item. Not for them self, but to sell. If you haven't seen at the bottum of my blog I'm going to start selling my craft ideas. I think I'm going to burn my little sign in a piece of wood and hang on my craft room door. Has anyone else had this happen and if so what do you say to them and not be rude about it.
Even though I could believe they ask me.

Funny you should ask, yes. Woman bought 2 items from me and asked how I had applied moss, what glue ect. She wanted to know because her and a friend were making Fairy tables to sell on another site. She bought my stuff to copy it so what can I do? I just ignored her email so I wouldn't have to be rude. What would you do ?
ReplyDeleteI had to ask my husband. I'm one those people that don't say anything unless someone attack my husband or son' then it's different.
ReplyDeleteWell, he told me not to reply to them. He said if they are rude enough to ask. Then they should get your point when you don't reply with an answer.
It's sad, it seem more and more of us are having the same problem. I wish people would understand what it means to be a true artist and not a thief stealing someone creativity.
I agree with your husband, had I been in my younger days I would have fired back a nasty email.I am in my 50's brought up in a day when you were polite always, you know if you don't have anything good to say keep quiet and it's hard for me to keep quiet. I read Cauldron Craft's blog about her problem and feel bad for her, her work is so different than anyone else. You and her are my favorites on Etsy, you can really spot the copy cats. I hope the buyers can too. I have went on the other craft selling sites and opened a store in name only so no one would steal my name, maybe you should do that Midnight.
ReplyDeleteBTW Vicki and Victoria me are the same, it depends on which gmail I have open when I post.
ReplyDeleteIt has happened to alot of us and there is particular 'lady' copying work at the moment. We are all keeping an eye on her. It's a shame because her copies are absolutely terrable and they really let the artist side of miniatures down. As for the email, ignore it, this one is oblivious to polite requests to her to stop copying and find her own designs. Take a scoot around the blogs and you will many a bad reference to her.

Its sad to think this will forever be an ongoing topic. I just don't understand how a copier can live with them selves knowing there stealing a part of the artist moment of happiness. When they have created something for the first time and smile because they know they have created a piece of art. Then to turn around to find out someone has copied it and have done it so cheaply.
ReplyDeleteBear cabin I know who you speak of. Don't worry I don't think she will sell much as the hot glue she uses is visible and we all know hot glue won't stand the test of time and is a mess and her prices are so cheap it will scare people. At least my copy cat picked the easiest thing I make and I did sell her one, I would rather make new things but I have a standing order for them from a gift shop so I have to keep making them.
ReplyDeleteSomeday this person will also learn that it is not quanity, it is the quality of the work that will win in the end. Yes, the price is cheap, but so isn't the work. I know myself I would rather pay more to get the quality. Then pay less and have it fall apart in a matter of days.
ReplyDeleteI agree Midnight. Sometimes it takes so long to make something, I might think for hours on where to place a bottle or end up making something else to add to a cupboard or scene. Stands to reason you can't go to the dollar store get crap and glue it together and think its a quality miniature creation. Sorry about all this ranting on your blog. I feel much better now LOL.
ReplyDeleteI don't mine, it helps clear your mind and you can create your miniatures better that way. I believe if your filled with anger then probably like me you can't even look at your craft. So it's better to get it off your chess than not be able to do the one thing you love doing.
ReplyDeleteI guess I am a tad late with this but I'll jump in....
ReplyDeleteI have absolutely no problem giving advice or revealing how I made an item or where I have obtained supplies. I am happy to share any techniques or tips I have discovered or developed on my journey. The very best things about most miniaturists is that they are usually always willing to do so. While I would hate it if someone copied my work TO SELL, I don't really care what they do for their personal use. If they want to try making something similar to what I have made, I really cannot stop them.
As for copying, it is, unfortunatley, all around us....certainly not limited to a single individual. Especially, it seems, in the genre of "witchy" or magical things but also in food, though let's face it, who has a copyright on donuts? It is how the piece is put together and the concept is realized that makes it stand out from all the others
Frankily, I find it's rather boring to see the same thing over again and again...does no one have an unusual idea or original thought anymore?? Can we see something else besides re-born $1 Michael's hutches?? Please?
